A way to use layering in an otherwise conventional book format.
Christopher Alexander presents his book The timeless way of building1 in layers. The top layer is printed in italics, and written so you can read the whole book in around an hour at that level. Or you can read the more detailed argument between the italic headlines.
He explains that if you haven’t enough time, he’d rather you read his whole concept in summary form, than just read a couple of chapters and stop.
It’s an interesting strategy, but I don’t think it has a name. By reading the italic headlines, you get the essence or gist of Alexander’s argument, so I’m calling it gist layering.
