Gestalt principles: we see alignments of visual objects as significant, and actively look for shapes and structures.
We see the four dots on the left as a random group. But on the right the same four dots can be seen as a square. This is the Closure Principle. The grid systems used by graphic designers are based on this – readers see the resulting visual order as organising the content into significant sequences or groups.
The Continuity Principle is similar, but applies to lines rather than shapes – it explains why we can easily see trends in graphed data.
