Make it obvious at a glance why someone should read your document.

Before people start to read anything, they need to know it’s relevant.

Don’t make them work too hard to find out who it’s from, why they should read it, and in what depth.

We used to design a lot of transactional documents, like bills, insurance renewals or pension statements. In customer research, people would always comment that they wanted to see key information at a glance – the total, for example.

If there are too many pieces of key information, you can use a dashboard to pull them together in one place that people can find at first glance.

How this helps
You sometimes have to defend the glanceability of your design, and to stop it accumulating extra content that swamps the main headline.
