A classic design school trick to see your layout without reading the words.
As you design a page you become familiar with the content, and it’s hard to be objective about your design. If you squint so you’re reading through your eye lashes and your eyes are not properly focused, the main shape of your design becomes apparent (or not). Alternatively you can cover the page with several layers of tracing paper.
Here are two layouts for the same content:
Now look at them out of focus:
Even out of focus we can see the large number 5 in the right hand page, and the main chunks of content are much better differentiated.
It will be easier to skim-read, because the layout is supporting the writer’s structure, using design principles such as proximity, prominence, chunking and sequencing.
