Three reasons to make things stand out on the page
These are terms you might possibly hear in a design studio. They are all about making something on the page stand out and draw your attention.
Heroes are images that represent the topic. In the spread below, one bike is made the hero, so you focus on it as a prototype, and can then compare it to the variants on the right.
Pops are things that stand out and stop the page looking grey and boring. I don’t think there’s research evidence of a cognitive effect (has anyone looked?) but I see them as about imageability, and creating place memory. In this website the bold numbers are pops – they draw your eye to the title.
Violators are bold statements that cut across the design. Typical example are flashes on packs that say ‘25% off’ or ‘NEW!’. Magazines often use images in this way, cutting across the title to dramatise the cover.
